Techtalk 174: Installation Considerations for Selvage Edge (V2V2) Vinyl Membrane

Duradek Vinyl to Vinyl 2-sides (V2V2) is identical to our existing line of woven backed products with one exception, it has a selvage edge (without backing) along both sides of the membrane.

A selvage edge is produced by having the woven fabric backing placed 3/4″ narrower than the vinyl along both sides while being manufactured.

The V2V2 process produces a 3/4″ (+/- 1/4″) selvage edge along both sides of the roll.
Roll size — 6 ft wide by 25 yds long
Colors and Styles — Ultra Legacy Driftwood Initial Launch Color

Installation Notes

As the selvage edge is on both sides of the membrane, placing adjoining rolls in the opposite directions (ABBA method) is achievable if necessary. Rolls can now be placed in any direction.

GLUING AND WELDING WITH A 3/4″ SELVAGE EDGE:

  • Glue back of membrane to edge of fabric.
  • Overlap 3/4″ onto previously installed sheet.
  • Weld main seam using one pass with a 3/4″ nozzle and then cap weld.

Note: If the selvage edge is 1/2″ or 1″ (which still falls within tolerances) please continue to use the 3/4″ measurement for layout, gluing and welding.

NUANCES OF WELDING V2V2:

  • The scrim acted as an insulator to the heat and therefore the overlapping sheet took longed to become molten. The 2 surfaces of vinyl will now become molten and ready to be fused together at the same time.
  • The heat or speed may need to be adjusted slightly. The heat turned down and/or the speed that you weld at be increased. Either will be minor. But the result will be a quicker weld.

RECESSED SEAMS:

When creating routered seams with V2V2 vinyl, ensure the router bit depth is properly adjusted to account for the thickness of the vinyl’s selvage edges. Note that these edges may be slightly thinner than vinyl that includes a scrim backing.

To set the correct depth:

  • Position the router platen directly on the 3/4″ selvage edge of the V2V2 vinyl.
  • Lower the router bit until it just touches the plywood substrate.
  • Make a test pass to verify the depth, ensuring the overlap becomes flush with the surrounding vinyl surface.

Note: Independent testing, performed by Intertek Testing Services, for Lap Joint Strength, on seams using the selvage edge products vs the conventional woven-backed products indicated seam Break Strength improvement of 7% and Elongation at Max Load improvement of 9% with the selvage edge product.
