Techtalk 174: Installation Considerations for Selvage Edge (V2V2) Vinyl Membrane

Duradek Vinyl to Vinyl 2-sides (V2V2) is identical to our existing line of woven backed products with one exception, it has a selvage edge (without backing) along both sides of the membrane.

The V2V2 manufacturing process produces a 3/4″ (+/- 1/4″) selvage edge, without backing, along both sides of the roll. Roll size is 6 ft wide by 25 yds long and is available in our Ultra Legacy Driftwood Color at launch.

KEY FEATURES:

  • With the scrim removed at the seam, you now have an immediate vinyl to vinyl weld.
  • The ABBA method of flipping the vinyl to have the same sides matching up to each other can be used/considered.
  • If using PVC coated flashing you now have a scrim free edge to weld to the top (or front face) of the flashing.

STORAGE AND WELDING CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Try not to store the vinyl on its edge (standing up) for an extended period of time (a few days max).
  • The installation technique for V2V2 vinyl is very similar to installing any other vinyl, with a few exceptions:
    • Welding the vinyl can/should be done at a lower temperature and slightly faster pace as the scrim doesn’t have to be burned away. The pace and temperature used are a personal preference. For example, on a Leister heat welder, you would set the temp dial to 6.0 instead of 6.5.

NUANCES:

  • The width of the vinyl is still 72″ and the width of the scrim is now 70 – 1/2″.
  • There could be a variance of up to 1/4” on the selvage edge on each side. So the selvage edge could go anywhere from 1/2″ – 1″. The scrim will remain at 70 – 1/2″.
  • At times the edge of the vinyl without the scrim may appear to be a bit “ruffled” or wavy due to it being unsupported by the scrim. It will relax and lay flat into either glue or on the seam. It will not cause any issues for adhesion or welding.

Note: Independent testing, performed by Intertek Testing Services, for Lap Joint Strength, on seams using the selvage edge products vs the conventional woven-backed products indicated seam Break Strength improvement of 7% and Elongation at Max Load improvement of 9% with the selvage edge product. Both backing options pass all required tests.
