Duradek Training Required Tools List

1. 7” Grinder

Makita — Model #GA7021 (Home Depot) Makita — Model #GA9031 (Home Depot); or
Bosch — Model #1974-8 (Home Depot)

2. Backer Pad

Carried by Lowes, not Home Depot.

Note: If you get the DeWalt grinder, the Gator brand backer pad will not fit on it and you will only be able to use the flap disc, which is too aggressive for the Duradek application. Also, keeping a couple of old discs as backers makes the actual grinding disc stiffer.

3. Sanding Disc

Available at both Lowes and Home Depot.

Note: The 36-grit disc works best for most situations. The 24-grit disc works well and fast, it just needs a little less pressure on the grinder. Practice and experience will give you the right combination.

4. Electric Planer

To plane plywood edges to install PVC Drip Flashing flush.

5. Two (2) Retractable Utility Knives

NOT THE FIXED blades. Use one for straight blades and one for hook blades.
This Stanley one works very well – it is a quick-change knife.

6. Straight-Cut Aviaton Snips (Yellow handle)

Do not get the rounded tip; they won’t cut drip edge close enough to the bend.

7. 4″ and 8″ Drywall Knives

Works best when mixing patch on job site.

8. Chalkline

BLUE CHALK ONLY. Do not use red or black chalk, it will bleed through the Duradek membrane.

9. Heat Gun

Leister or Bakrion (Duradek carries Bakrion) with 20mm tip.

10. Electric or Gas Leaf Blower

To get rid of all the debris and dust on the deck after grinding. A broom is not enough.

11. Everhard Seam Roller with Radiused Edge

12. Corner “V” Roller

Helps to get tight inside corners at 90°.

13. Penny Roller

For cap welding. You should learn how to cap with the seam roller and the penny roller. Never have welder blowing directly on the Penny Roller as it will overheat and the bearings will seize up.

14. Mixer Attachment for a Drill

Mixing the floor leveler can be done with a mixer attachment or on a scrap piece of plywood or Duradek. (This is where saving the old latex working buckets may come in handy). A stainless steel drywall mud pan works well for mixing the floor leveler.

Things you need for your working buckets of glue:

1. Paint pole

For roller adhesive. Longer metal pole is better than using the short wooden paint pole that flexes a lot.

2. Two (2) 5-gallon buckets with lids

For Latex and Contact working buckets. A work bucket will ideally be 1/3 full and house your roller cage/sleeve and brush. When your work bucket gets low, add glue until 1/3 full again. When your work bucket gets grungy, replace with new bucket.

For the Latex working bucket:

3. 5-gallon paint grid (when working out of bucket) OR Paint Tray

4. 9″ roller frame

The orange handled one from Home Depot works great. It is short enough to fit in the bucket with the lid on.

5. 9″ roller covers

3/8″ nap works the best to put the right amount of glue on the deck.

For the Contact working bucket:

6. 5-gallon paint grid (when working out of bucket)

7. 4″ roller frame

8. 4″ roller covers

Same diameter as the 9″. 3/8″ nap. Avoid ones with a plastic tube.

9. Brushes

For the contact adhesive. You can use the short bristled disposable brushes or the recommended regular paint brush for all paints. You can attach wire to it and hang it in the bucket so the bristles stay in the contact when stored.
